Philip K. Dick - Dictator of Dystopia

Philip Kindred Dick

Philip Kindred Dick

Most have never heard of Philip K. Dick even though he has a massive body of work, consisting of 121 short stories and 44 novels. Many of his stories have been made into movies starring the biggest names in Hollywood.

He is one of my Top 6 favorite writers. (Yes that is very specific. I don't have the heart to either rank them any further or cut one to create a Top 5.) Back to his movies, you've probably seen a few of them.

Here are some of the movies:

And still few know who he is. (Probably accounts for a lot of my fascination about him.)

So, if you also share a love of science fiction about dystopian societies, I recommend Philip K. Dick.

Yes it's true that the bulk of his work was written while he was a self admitted amphetamine addict, experimenting with LSD. And ok, maybe he suffered from hallucinations and felt he was being persecuted by the government. It all makes for excellent creative fodder for an author who excelled at themes where our sense of reality was proven time and time again to be a technological created illusion.

I would encourage you to explore his written works; since most of his short stories were written for magazines, a lot of them are available for free of very little on Amazon or the deluge of the internet. Happy digging!

For you lazy bums, luckily Dick has a crazy high book-to-movie rate so you can veg out in front of Netflix and catch a few of his movie adaptations. You may have already seen many of them. Think about any futuristic movie where society is supremely messed up and it was probably either written directly by Philip K. Dick or written by someone influenced by him.

Either way, it should make for some paranoid good fun!

Enjoy!
